A truck carrying 30 tonnes of Sodium Cyanide, a highly toxic chemical crashed on Wednesday afternoon along the Harare\u2013Bulawayo Highway, near the Rera area at 20-kilometre peg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the statement released by the Environmental Management Act (EMA), the accident occurred at around 4 pm. The truck was travelling from Harare to Bulawayo when it crashed, the chemical was supplied by ETG Curechem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSodium Cyanide can kill quickly if touched, swallowed, or inhaled, but so far, no chemical has leaked into the environment\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) says its team is on the ground. They have carried out a risk assessment and are working with relevant stakeholders to safely recover the truck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The agency continues to closely monitor the situation and ensure that all necessary precautionary measures are implemented to safeguard public health and environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In terms of the law, under Zimbabwe\u2019s Environmental Management Act Chapter 20:27, it is illegal to dump hazardous substances into the environment. Anyone who causes a spill must pay for cleaning up the damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another law, Statutory Instrument 268 of 2018, says any accidental release of dangerous chemicals must be reported to EMA, police, the Civil Protection Unit, and the local District Development Coordinator within one hour and in writing within 24 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
EMA highlights that it is closely monitoring the situation and provide further updates to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
