\u200eThe Mutare Regional Magistrates\u2019 Court has handed down a 15-year prison sentence to 38-year-old Cosmore Benito following his conviction for the rape of an 8-year-old girl in Penhalonga.

\u200e\u200bThe sentencing, confirmed in an official bulletin by the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) on February 18, 2026, marks the end of a harrowing legal process involving a Grade 2 pupil.

\u200e\u200bThe court heard that on the afternoon of October 25, 2025, Benito forced his way into the victim’s home while she was bathing. Despite the child’s pleas for him to leave, Benito stayed, eventually dragging her behind a bedroom curtain where he pinned her down and committed the assault.

\u200e\u200bIn an attempt to ensure his silence, the offender allegedly threatened to kill the young girl if she told anyone about the abuse.

\u200e\u200bThe crime was only uncovered later when the victim\u2019s aunt visited the home. The aunt noticed the child was having visible difficulty walking and, upon further examination, discovered physical signs of trauma and a foul smell. When questioned, the victim identified Benito as her attacker, leading to his immediate arrest.

\u200e\u200bThe NPAZ used the announcement of the verdict to issue a stern warning and a call to action for the public.
