BULAWAYO \u2013 Highlanders benefactor Wicknell Chivayo has refuted claims that he holds decisive power over the future of head coach Benjani Mwaruwari, stating that the coach\u2019s fate at the club rests solely on performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chivayo labeled suggestions that he controls Mwaruwari\u2019s position as \u201cfactually malicious\u201d and clarified that his role was limited to a recommendation based on a desire for local leadership at the Bulawayo giants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIf he fails to deliver, the club can change him\u2014it\u2019s entirely their decision,\u201d Chivayo stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe only suggested because we wanted local content.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The businessman revealed that Mwaruwari approached him after obtaining coaching qualifications, seeking an opportunity to work in Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBenjie came to my house saying he now had coaching qualifications and wanted to work at home. I told him to try Highlanders since he\u2019s a local boy too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While making the recommendation, Chivayo acknowledged that Highlanders were already in discussions with a South African coach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe suggested him, but Highlanders told me they had already spoken to a South African coach. I said it\u2019s fine as long as they handle his package\u2026 I wouldn\u2019t be involved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Terms of Appointment<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sources close to the negotiations confirm that Benjani Mwaruwari\u2019s appointment came with a comprehensive support package. The former Warriors captain is reported to be on a monthly salary of US$3,500, supplemented by a Toyota Hilux GD-6 double-cab vehicle provided by Chivayo to facilitate his duties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chivayo\u2019s latest comments aim to dispel growing public perception about the extent of his influence over Highlanders’ technical and administrative decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
