HARARE \u2013 Prominent journalist and activist Hopewell Chin\u2019ono has sparked a crucial national conversation on consent and sexual rights within relationships, stating clearly that sex without consent\u2014even within marriage\u2014constitutes rape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a detailed social media post directed primarily at young men, Chin\u2019ono outlined specific scenarios that qualify as rape under Zimbabwean law, challenging deep-seated cultural norms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIf your girlfriend or your wife says she does not want to have sex and you proceed to have sex with her, that is rape,\u201d Chin\u2019ono stated unequivocally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He expanded the definition to include acts of sexual deception and coercion, emphasizing that consent must be clear and continuous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIf your girlfriend or wife says she wants you to have sex with a condom and you deceive her and end up having sex without a condom and she discovers it, that is rape,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Further solidifying the principle of ongoing consent, Chin\u2019ono added,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIf your girlfriend or wife agrees to have sex with you and then changes her mind, and she says stop and you do not stop, in law that is rape.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cConsent must be freely given, informed, and ongoing, and it can be withdrawn at any time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
