BEITBRIDGE \u2013 The government has mobilised support for Beitbridge residents after recurrent flooding during the ongoing rainy season wrecked homes and destroyed essential belongings, exposing critical infrastructure challenges in the opposition-led municipality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Residents in low-lying areas, particularly in Dulivhadzimu and Mtendlovu suburbs, are counting heavy losses, with many household goods, food stocks, and personal items ruined. The situation has intensified scrutiny of the local authority\u2019s crisis management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMy groceries were swept away, and even my children\u2019s school books were destroyed,\u201d said Anna Mbedzi of Dulivhadzimu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are left with nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another Mtendlovu resident, Jameson Ndlovu, described a nightly battle against the water:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe constantly sweep water from our homes and use buckets to remove it, but our fridges, blankets and other possessions were soaked. It\u2019s a real hardship for families here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Authorities have now prioritised the relocation of families from the most vulnerable areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are conducting a feasibility study to determine whether to relocate residents or improve drainage infrastructure,\u201d said Beitbridge Municipality Town Clerk, Mr Loud Ramakgapola.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Beitbridge West Legislator, Honourable Thusani Ndou, backed the plan:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cRelocating flood-affected families to higher ground would be much safer and provide a permanent solution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Provincial leadership has warned of stricter oversight. Matabeleland South Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Albert Nguluvhe, stated,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe should work together. We have also talked about the possible reallocation of the affected people, and if, as Council, you are failing, we will be forced to bring a commission to run this Municipality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The intervention is framed within the government\u2019s broader development agenda, reflecting the Second Republic\u2019s commitment under the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2) to enhance service delivery and accelerate national transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
