{"id":11917,"date":"2026-01-21T11:50:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-21T11:50:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/zimgbcnews.co.zw\/?p=11917"},"modified":"2026-01-21T11:50:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T11:50:10","slug":"police-warn-public-over-ecocash-mobile-money-scams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/zimgbcnews.co.zw\/?p=11917","title":{"rendered":"Police Warn Public Over EcoCash, Mobile Money Scams"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Venus Charumbira<br>Courts and Crimes Reporter<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a warning to the public about a rise in mobile money fraud, targeting users of platforms like EcoCash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scammers are tricking people into giving away their secret mobile money details, including their PIN and One-Time Password (OTP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis allows criminals to get into victims&#8217; accounts without permission and steal their money\u201d, said Commissioner Paul Nyathi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the statement, the criminals use fake online promotions to lure their victims. These scams often advertise very cheap data packages or quick loans with easy repayment terms, which require payment via mobile money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When an unsuspecting victim shows interest, they are asked to provide their confidential PIN and OTP. Once the scammers have this information, they gain access to the victim&#8217;s mobile money wallet and start taking their funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ZRP has urged the public to be very careful when seeing links online that offer deals that seem too good to be true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To stay safe, the police advise the public to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>NEVER share your secret PIN or OTP with anyone.
