Popular social media couple Gilbert and Mai Nyathi have publicly detailed the collapse of their marriage in an emotional interview, with Mai Nyathi stating she believes her behaviour drove her husband to cheat, while Gilbert admitted to relationships with two other women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The couple, whose marital struggles have played out on social media for months, spoke candidly on the Tete Tilder Show about the complexities of diaspora marriages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Through tears, Mai Nyathi confessed to intense self-blame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOther things were caused by myself, I would give him mood swings because I would think that there is something wrong which he was doing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAs time went on, I\u2019m sure it was me who made him to go find someone outside this marriage and I always insult myself saying I was the cause of all this. I blame myself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gilbert Nyathi did not deny the infidelity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cTruly speaking, I caused this by having two other relationships outside our marriage,\u201d he admitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He cited the perils of their public social media life as a contributing factor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe reason is because the life we live on social media of sharing our contact details attract a lot of different types of women who send their explicit pictures and as men we get tempted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gilbert also revealed that marital conflicts disrupted their joint content creation, a cornerstone of their online brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhen she would be moody that was the time I would get out of the house. Even when we would record (skits), it will be a force matter,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Experts Warn of Social Media’s Danger to Private Life<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Relationship and marriage experts are warning that the couple’s very public breakdown highlights a growing risk. While many have embraced social media for connection and income, placing one\u2019s private life in the public domain carries serious risk factors that have led to the demise of several high-profile relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Private matters should not be in the public domain, no matter how one gains or profits from social media,” advised one Harare-based relationship counsellor who spoke to Zim GBC News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The pressure to maintain a perfect image, the influx of external temptation, and the inability to resolve issues privately often create a toxic mix. It always ends in tears.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Nyathis’ confession has sparked widespread debate about the sustainability of building a brand and a marriage simultaneously on the volatile stage of social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
