HARARE \u2014 Zimbabwe is grappling with a severe national blood shortage, with stocks dwindling to less than a day\u2019s supply in some areas, prompting an urgent public appeal from the National Blood Service Zimbabwe (NBSZ).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The country\u2019s blood bank is currently operating at critically low levels, holding between one to two days\u2019 worth of supply\u2014far below the desired five-day minimum safety stock required to meet routine and emergency medical needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
NBSZ Blood Supply Executive, Menard Mutenherwa, highlighted the precarious situation during a national campaign drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe blood supply is a moving target. While stock is replenished throughout the day, at any given moment, we are critically low,\u201d Mutenherwa stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSaving lives is a collective effort that cuts across sectors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The service relies heavily on voluntary donations and is now seeking strengthened partnerships with the private sector to reach new donors, particularly among working adults and families. Mutenherwa emphasized that such collaborations are vital for building a resilient system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBy working with trusted private sector partners, we are building a future-ready blood supply system that can reliably meet Zimbabwe\u2019s healthcare needs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The official reassured potential donors of the profound impact of a single contribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYour single donation can save up to three lives. We encourage people to come forward with confidence, knowing that their contribution truly makes a difference,\u201d Mutenherwa urged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He stressed that the sustainability of the national blood supply hinges on consistent participation from all age groups. NBSZ, a legally mandated not-for-profit organization, is responsible for the collection, processing, and distribution of blood nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The public is encouraged to visit their local donation centers to help address this life-saving deficit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
