With many licence discs having expired at the end of the year, authorities warn that driving with an expired licence exposes motorists to immediate penalties from law enforcement.

In a clarification initially provided in an October 2025 internal memo, ZINARA stated that its operations are strictly governed by the Vehicle Registration and Licensing Act, which offers no provision for a grace period at any time.

“ZINARA does not offer a 7-day grace period for vehicle licensing. Our operations are in accordance with Part IV to the Vehicle Registration and Licensing Act [Chapter 13:14], and in terms of this legislation no such grace period is provided for,” the authority confirmed.

This means a vehicle becomes non-compliant the day after its licence disc expires, and police are empowered to take immediate action.

Penalty Schedule and Renewal Window

While law enforcement can act from the first day of expiry, ZINARA’s financial penalties follow a specific schedule. Penalties begin to accrue 30 calendar days after the expiry date. However, during the initial 30-day period, the vehicle is still classified as non-compliant and liable for arrest or detention by police.

Motorists are encouraged to renew proactively.

“Renewal can be done within 60 days prior to the date of expiry (i.e., two months before expiry) to avoid penalties,” ZINARA advised.

Steps for Hassle-Free Renewal

To ensure compliance for the year ahead, ZINARA offers multiple renewal channels:

· ZINARA licensing offices and selected tollgates nationwide.
· Registered licensing agents across the country.
· Digital renewal via the ZINARA online platform and accredited agents.

Drivers are urged to renew their licences promptly to avoid fines and ensure their vehicles are legal for the road.

FOLLOW US FOR REAL-TIME UPDATES:
・X (Twitter): @ZimGbc
・Instagram: @ZimGBCNews
・TikTok: @ZimGBCNews_01
・Facebook: Zim GBC News
・YouTube: Zim GBC News

Get real-time alerts on WhatsApp:
+263 773 820 323

Zim GBC News | Global News From An African Perspective©️2026

Zim GBC News | Harare Correspondent The Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA) has issued a critical reminder to all motorists, firmly dispelling the widely held belief in a 7-day grace…

[6

post-11712","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-local-news
["GET
