The Zimbabwe Diamond and Allied Minerals Workers Union (ZDAMWU) has issued a stern condemnation of what it describes as the systemic exploitation of laborers driving the country’s booming mining sector. The union asserts that workers’ sacrifices are met with “poverty wages” and perilous working conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a year-end statement, ZDAMWU detailed the “profound struggles” of 2025, citing inflation-ravaged salaries, widespread casualization of labor, fatal workplace accidents, and the victimization of retirees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDespite the mining sector\u2019s billions in exports, workers reaped poverty,\u201d said ZDAMWU General Secretary Justice Chinhema.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNo more tolerance for a system where miners\u2019 blood oils the economy while they starve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The union acknowledged incoming Mines Minister Polite Kambamura\u2019s pledge for wider stakeholder consultation, emphasizing that worker input in policy formulation is critical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Looking ahead, ZDAMWU announced a major 2026 membership drive and pledged to push for reforms to the National Employment Council (NEC), stricter safety laws, and robust anti-corruption measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The statement also welcomed recent calls from Chinese officials to address alleged worker abuses by Beijing-based firms operating in Zimbabwe, viewing it as a significant step toward accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The union vowed to continue its fight for dignity, fair compensation, and justice, closing with a rallying cry:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
