BULAWAYO \u2013 Police in Bulawayo are investigating a series of five armed robberies that targeted residents in the Hillside and Old Luveve areas between December 17 and 20, with one incident involving an exchange of gunfire with cash-in-transit security guards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to a statement released by Bulawayo Provincial Press and Public Relations Officer, Inspector Msebele Nomalanga, the first incident occurred on December 17 at around 7 PM at Hillside Shopping Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe complainant, a security guard, and his colleague were tasked to collect USD $500. After parking, they were approached by four masked men, one armed with a pistol and a log,\u201d Inspector Nomalanga stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe accused persons started firing gun shots at the car which prompted the complainant to fire back. The accused persons then fled the scene.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The situation escalated in the early hours of December 20, when a spree of four home invasions rocked the Old Luveve suburb in quick succession, all involving a similar group of three masked assailants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the first home invasion at around 2 AM, three men armed with a machete, a pistol, and iron bars broke into a house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey demanded cash and the complainant gave them $24. They ransacked the house\u2026 and took two cellphones valued at $420,\u201d the police report detailed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Just 15 minutes later, a neighbouring home was targeted. The residents were threatened and robbed of $420 and R500. Another break-in followed at 2:45 AM, where $200 in cash was stolen. The final recorded robbery occurred at 3 AM, where a resident was threatened with a pistol and robbed of a total of $9,800.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Inspector Nomalanga urged heightened public vigilance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe urge members of the public to make sure that they tighten their home securities by securing their doors and windows with strong locks and install burglar bars,\u201d she advised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The police have appealed for information from the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe appeal to members of the public with information that may lead to the arrest of the accused persons to come forward and report at any nearest police station,\u201d Inspector Nomalanga concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Investigations are ongoing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
