BULAWAYO \u2014 Marking World AIDS Day with action, the Sexual Rights Centre (SRC) hosted a series of public sensitization meetings at Stanley Square on December 5, rallying the community in the fight against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The educational drive aimed to raise critical awareness about STI transmission, symptoms, and prevention, empowering both men and women with life-saving knowledge through open discussions and expert guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cEducation is crucial in combating STIs,” stated a health educator from the SRC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Our goal is to empower individuals with knowledge that can save lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The sessions detailed what STIs are\u2014infections primarily spread through sexual contact or, in some cases, shared needles\u2014and underscored the serious health consequences of leaving them untreated. The SRC strongly advocated for proven prevention strategies, including consistent condom use, limiting sexual partners, and regular health screenings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAwareness and education are our best tools,\u201d the SRC emphasized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe encourage everyone to engage in regular health screenings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Focus was placed on several common infections:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u00b7 Genital Warts: Caused by HPV, these were highlighted as manageable with proper treatment.
\u00b7 Gonorrhea: Noted to be on the rise, this bacterial infection can lead to severe complications if untreated. \u201cGonorrhea is on the rise in many communities,\u201d observed Kumbana, a Zim GBC Reporter.
\u00b7 Chlamydia: Often symptomless, the SRC and a supporting nurse from Mpilo Hospital stressed the vital need for testing, as undiagnosed cases can cause significant damage.
\u00b7 Herpes: Described as a manageable lifelong condition where awareness is key to preventing transmission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The community\u2019s response was positive and engaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cToday\u2019s event shows the power of community involvement in health awareness,\u201d said a resident from Mokokoba who attended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s inspiring to see people gather to learn and share knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As the event concluded, participants were urged to keep the conversation alive and take proactive steps in their healthcare. The SRC reaffirmed its commitment to hosting future sensitization meetings, strengthening community education on sexual health and rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The gathering ended on a note of collective resolve, with the crowd echoing a message of hope:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
