Bulawayo, \u2013 Ian Arthur\u202fMathe, 21, has reclaimed the mic under the flamboyant moniker Flam.eyy, turning personal hardship into a soaring soundtrack for a generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Born on 9\u202fJune\u202f2004, he lost his father in Grade\u202f4. His mother, a single parent, kept the family afloat by plaiting hair while his older sister Charmaine and a clutch of cousins stood as steadfast pillars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His musical awakening came unexpectedly\u2014 a bedroom jam with school\u2011mate Hard\u202fEmpire (now his producer) and cousin Arnold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The raw track sparked a fire, sending Flam.eyy across the border to South\u202fAfrica, where he soaked up cultures, experimented with the BandLab app, and began weaving dreams into beats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 2024, he returned home to sit for his O\u2011Levels, only to hit a financial brick wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Enter Mthungameli Ndlovu, principal of Phoenix Institute of Learning, who offered a lifeline scholarship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Simultaneously, collaborations with Peazybeats and Ilvshawn birthed the anthem Reach, swiftly followed by his debut single Dance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A chance encounter with Bulawayo\u2019s hip\u2011hop collective NoHeeps saw him gracing the stage on 23\u202fAugust, and with producers Hard Empire (Eruption Records) and Treva\u202fDoskie he dropped the buzz\u2011worthy project Smoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The track ricocheted across Zambia, Nigeria, South\u202fAfrica and the United Kingdom, swelling his fanbase and drawing support from family, fans, and Sonk, leader of NoHeeps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yet, Flam.eyy remains grounded, voicing the industry\u2019s cut\u2011throat reality:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cLocal artists are in a race, pushing egos instead of unity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He calls for more supportive events, prize\u2011laden competitions, and invitations from authorities to showcase Zimbabwean talent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What\u2019s Next?
With a growing global footprint and a hunger for collaboration, Flam.eyy is set to release his first EP later this year, promising fresh beats that blend Bulawayo grit with international flair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
