GWERU \u2013 In a landmark judgment, the Bulawayo High Court has convicted Peter Dube on two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder, concluding a dramatic four-year international manhunt that spanned multiple continents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Justice Munamato Mutevedzi delivered a damning verdict against Dube, describing the April 22, 2021 shooting spree as an act of “unmitigated violence” that left two people dead and two others seriously injured in Gweru.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The medieval ruthlessness with which the violence manifested was said to have shaken the usually sleepy town of Gweru,” Justice Mutevedzi stated in his judgment, painting a harrowing picture of the night Dube killed Shelton Chiduku and Gamuchirai Madungwe, and shot Nyasha Nharingo and her sister Nyaradzo Nharingo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The court heard how Dube, a Gweru car salesman, accused his friend Chiduku of having an affair with his girlfriend, Nyasha. After police briefly intervened in a domestic dispute and left, Dube retrieved a firearm and executed his planned attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“At point-blank range, he shot Shelton and killed him instantly\u2026 Gamu tried to flee. Unfortunately, she couldn’t go far. She was also shot and died on the spot,” the judgment detailed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Justice Mutevedzi continued:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“From very close range, he shot Nyasha\u2026 He then took aim at Nyaradzo\u2026 The bullet found its mark just above her right eye\u2026 Her eye was ruptured. Satisfied with his grisly handiwork, the accused nonchalantly walked out and left the scene which resembled a graveyard.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The judgment revealed for the first time the elaborate escape route Dube followed with the assistance of his senior wife, Nomatter Chawana. He fled to South Africa, moved to Eswatini, acquired a false Mozambican identity, and eventually settled in Ireland where he lived undetected for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The court completely rejected Dube’s defense of mental illness, with Justice Mutevedzi describing it as “malingering, calculated, and unsupported by evidence.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Judge cited state psychiatrist Dr. Nemache Mawere’s assessment that,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The accused was simply play-acting\u2026 His gestures were not sequential\u2026 He was trying to run away from punishment.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Justice Mutevedzi also expressed concern about unresolved aspects of the case, noting that Nyaradzo later died from complications of her gunshot wounds, yet prosecutors never added this to the murder charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Why then that death was not added to the list of murders can only be explained by prosecution,” the Judge remarked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also questioned why Dube’s senior wife, who assisted his escape, was never investigated, stating,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“She possibly committed a crime\u2026 but nobody ever raised an eyebrow against her.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With the insanity defense rejected, Justice Mutevedzi found Dube guilty on all charges, noting that the killings were “deliberate, targeted, and executed with chilling calmness.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dube now awaits sentencing, bringing closure to a case that has captivated the nation for four years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
