SHANGHAI \u2013 Zimbabwe’s Midlands Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Owen Ncube has unveiled billion-dollar investment opportunities to Chinese investors in Shanghai, emphasizing the province’s potential in mining, agriculture, and manufacturing sectors during the 8th China International Import Expo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During his tour of the China Medical Device Manufacturing Project, Minister Ncube extended an open invitation to Chinese businesses, stating,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“My tour of the China Medical Device Manufacturing Project was indeed an eye-opener. I gladly invite you to invest in the Midlands Province, which offers unlimited opportunities beyond the health sector.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The minister highlighted flagship projects including the US$1.5 billion steel plant by Tsingshan Holdings through its subsidiary Dinson Iron and Steel Company, which is expected to create thousands of jobs and transform the regional economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The People’s Republic of China has been Zimbabwe’s biggest investment partner, creating jobs, incomes and facilitating technology transfer across various sectors such as mining, agriculture, and manufacturing,” Ncube said, acknowledging China’s historical support during Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle and the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, the investment pitch comes amid growing concerns over Chinese business practices in Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Recent incidents have brought Chinese companies into the spotlight for alleged labor law violations and worker abuse, including the recent murder of a Black Zimbabwean worker at a Chinese-owned mine that sparked national outrage and calls for better worker protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite these concerns, Minister Ncube emphasized Zimbabwe’s economic reforms, including adjustments to the Indigenisation and Empowerment Act and improvements to the ease of doing business, which he said have made the country more attractive to foreign investors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The China Medical Device Manufacturing Project is expected to supply essential equipment to strengthen Zimbabwe’s healthcare system, particularly in gynaecology, obstetrics, radiology, and pediatrics departments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
