HARARE \u2013 In a moving ceremony this weekend, the University of Zimbabwe\u2019s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences paid tribute to Rosalie Chigariro, who made history in 2021 as the first black Zimbabwean to voluntarily donate her body to medical science, fulfilling a final wish to serve others even after her death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ms. Chigariro, who defied a bleak medical prognosis at birth to live a full life, has spent the last four years as an invaluable guide for hundreds of the nation\u2019s future healthcare professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her selfless donation to the Department of Biomedical Sciences provided a crucial, hands-on learning tool for students in medicine, nursing, physiotherapy, and other critical health fields\u2014a resource that cannot be replicated by textbooks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe gift of body donation is one of the most profound forms of service to humanity,\u201d said Josephine Chidaushe, chairperson of the Department of Biomedical Sciences, during the tribute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThrough her selflessness, Ms. Chigariro became a silent teacher, one who helped nurture the next generation of doctors, surgeons, and health professionals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Having lived with significant health challenges from childhood, Ms. Chigariro developed a deep appreciation for the fragility of life. Her family shared that her decision was a deliberate and heartfelt act of gratitude, aimed at helping others learn and heal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are deeply proud of her strength and the legacy she leaves behind,\u201d her sister, Petronilla Chigariro, told reporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cToday we say goodbye, not in sorrow, but in gratitude for the profound impact she has made.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For the students who learned from her gift, the experience was transformative. Michelle van der Heiden, a final-year medical student, described it as a cornerstone of her education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cLearning from such a gift was a humbling and transformative experience that will forever shape how we serve patients,\u201d van der Heiden said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a poignant conclusion to her journey, Ms. Chigariro was laid to rest at Chishawasha Mission, the place where she spent her formative high school years and first discovered her profound sense of purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her legacy now endures in the skills and compassion of the healthcare workers she helped to train.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
