SANYATI \u2013 Police have arrested Vengesai Jabulani Mutasa (41) following a violent rampage that claimed the life of Constable Courage Muchechesi and left another officer seriously injured, with ballistic tests confirming the same firearm was used in last August’s murder of Ruwa businessman Joseph Mutangadura.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
National Police Spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the breakthrough in a case that has highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Vengesai Jabulani Mutasa (41) after the callous and brutal shooting to death of Constable Courage Muchechesi at ZRP Sanyati,” Commissioner Nyathi stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a chilling account of Sunday’s early morning events, Nyathi revealed that Mutasa had earlier shot Detective Constable Ngwenya of CID Homicide who was part of a team attempting to arrest him in connection with Mutangadura’s August murder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The gun which killed the policeman is the same pistol which killed the businessman Mutangadura,” Nyathi confirmed, highlighting the ballistic evidence linking both crimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The violent spree culminated at Sanyati Police Station around 2 AM Sunday, where Mutasa confronted Constable Muchechesi as he was taking a statement from assault victim Abraham Mayavo. After demanding the whereabouts of homicide detectives and claiming they had stolen his US$1,000, Mutasa ordered both men to lie down while demanding cash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Mayavo handed over $5 but Muchechesi tried to flee into an adjacent room but was shot in the stomach,” Nyathi detailed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The suspect’s arrest came through swift coordination between police and vigilant community members across Sanyati, Kadoma, Chakari and Patchway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police commends members of the public in Sanyati, Kadoma, Chakari, and Patchway who quickly mobilized and assisted to effect an arrest on the suspect,” Nyathi said, praising the community’s courage and cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mutasa now faces multiple charges including double murder, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The investigation into Mutangadura’s murder has gained momentum with the earlier arrest of Phillip Mutasa, 38, in Gweru on October 3, with police believing eight suspects were involved in what appears to have been a robbery gone wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
