The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a statement defending its roadblock operations, seeking to address rising public frustration over what many motorists describe as excessive and disruptive checkpoints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a detailed response to the outcry, police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi insisted that all roadblocks are formally approved and strictly supervised to prevent misconduct and corruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAll police roadblock schedules are submitted by station, district and provincial commanders to the operations department at police general headquarters for guidance and approval,\u201d said Commissioner Nyathi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He further clarified that official policy prohibits multiple roadblocks within a 30 to 50-kilometre radius in any policing area, a measure intended to “reduce inconvenience to motorists and minimise opportunities for abuse.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Addressing concerns about officer behaviour, Nyathi stated,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOfficers manning roadblocks are supervised by their commanders at all levels to ensure discipline, prevent corruption, and maintain quality service to the public.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The spokesperson acknowledged that the number of checkpoints may temporarily increase during special operations, national events, or urgent law enforcement actions, such as the pursuit of suspects or stolen property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nyathi also urged the public to play a role in maintaining standards, calling on motorists to \u201creport any irregular or suspicious police checkpoints directly to the Commissioner-General of Police or provincial commanders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He promised swift investigations and disciplinary action where misconduct is proven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ZRP’s statement comes against a backdrop of mounting complaints from motorists about harassment and alleged corruption at checkpoints, particularly on major highways and key urban routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
