President Emmerson Mnangagwa has personally “arranged” a once-off US$150 bonus for civil servants, a gesture the government frames as presidential generosity but critics warn risks reducing public servants to “squatters in the President’s pocket.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Labour Minister Edgar Moyo announced Thursday that the bonus would be paid in two US$75 instalments in November and December to “brighten the festive season” for civil servants and pensioners. The move comes alongside promises of housing schemes, medical aid recapitalization, and salary framework reforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, the timing and framing of the payment as presidential charity rather than systemic reform has raised questions about political motives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“After years of resistance and neglect, government’s newfound sympathy appears less like benevolence and more like calculation,” the analysis notes, pointing to years of unmet promises to civil servants who have seen their salaries eroded by inflation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
