MUTARE \u2013 In a decisive move that sets the stage for a major political and constitutional shift, ZANU-PF has formally reaffirmed its resolution to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term of office beyond 2028 to 2030, issuing a stern warning against internal opposition to the plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The resolution was presented by the party\u2019s Secretary for Legal Affairs, Ziyambi Ziyambi, during the closing session of the 22nd National People\u2019s Conference. The move comes just a day after Vice President Constantino Chiwenga delivered a speech widely interpreted as a caution against personalizing the party’s Vision 2030 agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ziyambi credited President Mnangagwa with driving the nation’s progress, stating,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIn recognition of the extensive developmental milestones and the significant socio-economic progress achieved under the leadership of the President\u2026 it is resolved that his term of office as President of the Republic of Zimbabwe be extended beyond 2028 to 2030.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He directed the party and government to \u201cinitiate the requisite legislative amendments\u201d to implement the resolution, ensuring \u201ccontinuity, stability and the sustained transformation of the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a pointed warning that analysts suggest was aimed at silencing internal critics, including potentially the Vice President, Ziyambi emphasized that all party members are bound by conference resolutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAll members of the Party are bound to observe the resolutions of the National Congress and National People\u2019s Conference and to oppose such would be gross misconduct,\u201d he declared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The conference also moved to strengthen ideological control, resolving to provide \u201cadequate resources to the Chitepo School of Ideology to cascade ideological orientation from leadership to grassroots level.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If implemented, the extension would allow President Mnangagwa, who has publicly described himself as a “constitutionalist,” to remain in office for nearly 13 years, consolidating his rule well beyond the current constitutional and legal term limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
