HARARE \u2013 In a significant development on Zimbabwe’s political landscape, the National Progressive Democrats (NPD) was officially launched yesterday, presenting itself as a fresh alternative to what it describes as a “corrupt, corrosive and oppressive” system and promising to deliver a “New Zimbabwe” to citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the theme “Building a capable democratic developmental state for empowering citizens towards creating and maintaining good living standards,” the new party’s president, Togara Fambi, declared the launch marked the beginning of an important journey in the nation’s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a direct challenge to the ruling establishment, Fambi stated,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The NPD is derived from the \u2018General Consensus\u2019 by the people of Zimbabwe, that the current system running our country is corrupt, corrosive and oppressive.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He further expressed that previous opposition forces trusted to deliver change “are taking long to bring the much-desired change” and appear “less likely to deliver the transformation that we so yearn for.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fambi framed the democratic struggle as a relay race, asserting,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Today the NPD picks the stick, with much pace, determination and energy.” He outlined a stark vision of the country’s current state, noting,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“According to the Borgen Project, 60% of Zimbabweans live below the Poverty Datum Line. It is a pity,” and highlighting that “forty-five years after independence dawn, the country is still guessing on a currency to use.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking toward the 2028 harmonised elections, the NPD leader issued a rallying cry, saying,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Elections are not won by caution but they are won by conviction. To those who say the system is rigged and nothing can change, I say to you, defeatism is the language of the oppressor.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a notable appeal to the security services, Fambi, identifying himself as a former police officer, addressed the pressures they face:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I am now appealing to you all that we are now equipped and mandated to work together for a common purpose and common goal that is to thwart the autocratic behaviour of the ZANU PF regime.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The party’s platform commits to a comprehensive transformation, promising “a thriving economy, driven by innovation,” “a fair and independent judiciary,” and “an empowered citizenry, free to speak, organise and vote without fear and intimidation.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fambi concluded with a definitive statement of intent:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This is not a dream\u2014it is a political project and it begins today. The time for waiting is over. The time for building has come.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
