The truth emerged when a Bulawayo man grew suspicious that his youngest daughter bore no resemblance to her siblings. A DNA test confirmed she was not his biological child, prompting an investigation that eventually connected both families through social media. Further testing confirmed the babies had been exchanged at birth.

Mpilo Hospital has acknowledged negligence in the case, attributing the error to staff shortages and systemic failures during Zimbabwe’s economic crisis of 2007.

Advocate Thabani Mpofu, representing the affected families, outlined the potential legal claims against the institution.

“Both sets of parents could sue for the loss of family comfort and integrity, while the children could seek compensation for the emotional turmoil and disruption to their lives,” Mpofu stated.

He further explained that the case presents complex questions about identity and cultural adaptation, noting that “although proving damages may be challenging, courts can make decisions that uphold rights and discourage hospital negligence.”

The case has added to Mpilo Hospital’s growing list of controversies, which include previous scandals involving nursing students with fraudulent qualifications and a case of a fraudulent doctor practicing at the facility.

Attempts to obtain comment from the hospital’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Narcisius Dzvanga, were initially delayed. He later indicated that hospital records would need to be reviewed before a comprehensive response could be provided.

Tragically, the revelation comes too late for one parent – the father of the child raised in Shurugwi passed away without ever learning the truth about his daughter’s biological origins.

Stay Connected with Zim GBC News:

X (Twitter): @ZimGbc
•Instagram: @ZimGBCNews
•TikTok: @ZimGBCNews_01
•Facebook: Zim GBC News
•YouTube: Zim GBC News

Get real-time alerts on WhatsApp:
+263 773 820 323

For in-depth coverage, visit our website: www.zimgbcnews.co.zw

Zim GBC News | Global News From An African Perspective©2025

All rights reserved.

Zim GBC News | Gender and Community BULAWAYO – Mpilo Central Hospital is confronting serious legal repercussions after it was revealed that two newborns were accidentally switched at birth 18…

[128

post-10098","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-community-and-gender-affairs
["GET
